What is the difference between a tango festival, marathon and encuentro?
A festival generally combines classes and social dancing, sometimes with performances or live music. A marathon usually puts social dancing at the centre of the weekend. An encuentro often follows a more traditional milonga format, with particular expectations around invitations and floor etiquette. These labels vary between organizers. Read the program and participation guidelines to understand each event.
How do I choose a tango event?
Start with what you enjoy: workshops, social dancing, particular music or a destination you want to visit. Then check the expected dance experience, venue, schedule and total travel budget. Consider whether you want a busy festival program or more time between milongas. Your teacher or dancers who know your preferences may also offer useful recommendations.
Can I attend a tango festival or marathon alone?
You can travel alone, but registration rules differ. Some events accept individual applications; others request paired registration or manage applications by dance role. Check the organizer’s rules before booking. You can also use El Compas to post a partner request or make shared travel plans.
Do I need a partner for tango festival workshops?
Some workshops require you to register with a partner; others accept individual dancers or rotate partners during class. Check the conditions for the specific workshop. If you need someone to attend with, post a request on El Compas naming the event, class and your dance role.
Are tango events suitable for beginners?
Look for events that explicitly welcome beginners and offer suitable classes. A demanding social dance weekend may require more experience with navigating a shared dance floor. Read the level guidance and ask the organizer or your teacher if you are unsure.
How early should I register?
Check when applications open and how places are allocated. An application may need approval before you can pay or confirm attendance. Where possible, wait for confirmation before making non-refundable travel bookings.
How long does a tango event last?
Many events take place over a weekend, while others run for several days or longer. Check the full schedule, including any opening or closing milongas outside the main dates. Plan your arrival and departure around the activities you want to attend.
What should I bring to a tango festival or marathon?
Bring comfortable dance shoes, clothes you can move in and spare clothing for longer dance sessions. Check whether the venue has floor or footwear requirements and whether any evening has a particular dress code. Keep your booking confirmations and essential travel information accessible.
Can I share accommodation or a ride with other dancers?
You can post ride and accommodation requests on El Compas. Include your destination, dates and event so other dancers can understand your plans. Discuss arrangements directly and confirm the details before committing.
Does joining an event on El Compas mean I have a ticket?
Joining an El Compas event community does not confirm registration, admission or a ticket. Complete the organizer’s own registration and payment process separately.
Are all events in the calendar El Compas partners?
The calendar and our partnerships are separate. Events identified as partners have an agreed collaboration with El Compas; a calendar listing alone does not indicate a partnership.
