Find a tango partner

Find a tango partner near you

Someone to practise with on Tuesday. A regular partner for your class. A dancer who loves the same embrace and is a short ride from your milonga. Search around your own neighbourhood, filter by role, level, style and height, and when you travel, find your next partner before you land.

  • Free for dancers
  • Leader, follower or double role
  • You choose what your profile shows

Search around you

The right dancer is probably closer than you think

Pick the area you want to search around, then narrow it down to the dancers who fit. You see people near your own milonga, not a list from across the world.

  • Role. Leader, follower or double role.
  • Level. From newcomer to advanced, so nobody dances out of their depth.
  • Tango style. Traditional, salon, milonguero, neo tango, queer tango, tango escenario, close embrace or open embrace.
  • Height. Set a range in centimetres, because the embrace has to fit.
  • Connections only. Show just the dancers you already know.

Going somewhere? Change your search area and look for partners at your destination. Your profile keeps your home city.

Your tango profile

Know who you are dancing with before you meet

Most partner requests live and die in a group chat, where a name tells you nothing about how someone dances. A tango profile puts the answer next to the name.

  • Dance role, level and years of dancing
  • Height and tango styles
  • Languages, home city and connections in common
  • A few words about you and your favourite tango music
  • Your travel plans and the events you are attending

What others see depends on what each dancer shares and on the app's visibility settings.

From "I need a partner" to the dance floor

Create your profile

Role, level, height, styles, languages. You only share what you want to.

Search around you, or post a request

Browse dancers near your milonga, or post what you are looking for: a class, a practica, a festival workshop. Name the place and the dates.

Say hello and agree the details

Chat, check the practical points with the organizer, and meet at the school or the milonga.

In your home city

Find a regular partner for your school, your practica or your Tuesday milonga.

At a festival

Name the event and the workshops you want. Partners arrive already knowing the plan.

When you travel

Add your trip, search around your destination and introduce yourself before you land.

Write a request that gets answers

  • Be specific. One festival workshop is not the same as a weekly class. Name which one.
  • Say what you need. Role, level and style, in plain words. Use the organizer's level names where there are any.
  • Be honest about your experience. Years of dancing give context. They are not a promise of compatibility.
  • Check with the organizer. Finding a partner does not guarantee a place. Ask about registration, rotation and costs.
  • Keep private details private. No home address or payment details in a public request.
  • Be kind about no. Everyone is looking for the right fit, and a polite reply costs nothing.

Partner search questions

Is El Compas free?

Yes, El Compas is free for dancers.

How do I find a tango partner near me?

Open the partner search in the app and set the area you want to search around. Then filter by role, level, tango style and height to see dancers close to you who fit what you are looking for.

Can I choose what appears on my profile?

Yes. Complete your profile and review the app's privacy settings before sharing personal details. See our privacy policy for information about data use and rights.

How do I find a tango partner for a festival?

Pick the event, say which workshops you plan to attend and which role you dance, then post a partner request. Dancers heading to the same festival can answer you directly.

Can I search by style, level and height?

Yes. The search filters include role (leader, follower or double role), level from newcomer to advanced, tango style and height in centimetres. You can also show only the dancers you are already connected with.

What should I put in a partner request?

The event or school, the city, the dates, the role and level you are looking for, and what you want to do together: a workshop, a practica or a milonga. A specific plan gets more answers than a general message.

Does changing my search area change where my profile says I live?

No. Changing the area only changes what you see in the search. Your profile keeps your home city, so you can look for dancers in a city you are about to visit without moving house on paper.

I dance both roles. Is there a place for me?

Yes. Roles describe how you dance, not who you are. Double role is a role in its own right on El Compas: add it to your profile, or add leader and follower as well, and dancers looking for a partner who switches will find you. Festivals such as Totally in Tango are built around double role dancing.

Is queer tango part of the search?

Yes. Queer tango is a tango style on your profile and in the search filters, next to traditional, salon, milonguero, neo tango, tango escenario, close embrace and open embrace. You can find queer tango dancers in your area, or be found by them. El Compas is for every dancer, whoever you dance with.
