Getting started

Getting started

Is El Compas free?

Yes. El Compas is free for dancers. Create your tango profile and connect with other dancers.

How do I join El Compas?

Open El Compas and follow the registration and profile setup. If you have an event invitation, use that link to enter its community.

Is El Compas safe?

Use profiles and conversations to understand who you are making plans with, and review your privacy settings. Report or block unwanted contact where the app provides those controls. No platform can guarantee another person’s conduct, so agree plans carefully and meet in an appropriate setting.

Who can see my profile?

Visibility depends on the information you share, your settings and the relevant app feature. Review the app’s privacy settings and our privacy policy before posting sensitive information. Public website pages do not display personal dancer data.

Can I choose what appears on my profile?

Yes. Complete your profile and review the app's privacy settings before sharing personal details. See our privacy policy for information about data use and rights.

Partners

Find a tango partner

How do I find a tango partner near me?

Open the partner search in the app and set the area you want to search around. Then filter by role, level, tango style and height to see dancers close to you who fit what you are looking for.

How do I find a tango partner for a festival?

Choose your event, explain the classes or workshops you want to attend, and describe the role you need. Use a partner request to start a conversation with dancers.

Can I search by style, level and height?

Yes. The search filters include role (leader, follower or double role), level from newcomer to advanced, tango style and height in centimetres. You can also show only the dancers you are already connected with.

I dance both roles. Is there a place for me?

Yes. Roles describe how you dance, not who you are. Double role is a role in its own right on El Compas: add it to your profile, or add leader and follower as well, and dancers looking for a partner who switches will find you. Festivals such as Totally in Tango are built around double role dancing.

Is queer tango part of the search?

Yes. Queer tango is a tango style on your profile and in the search filters, next to traditional, salon, milonguero, neo tango, tango escenario, close embrace and open embrace. You can find queer tango dancers in your area, or be found by them. El Compas is for every dancer, whoever you dance with.

Does changing my search area change where my profile says I live?

No. Changing the area only changes what you see in the search. Your profile keeps your home city, so you can look for dancers in a city you are about to visit without moving house on paper.

What belongs in a tango partner request?

Include the event or school, city, dates, role and level you are looking for, and a short description. Be clear about whether the plan is for a class, practica or milonga.

Rides

Tango rideshare

How do I arrange a ride to a tango event?

Include your origin, destination, travel date and the related event. Agree departure time, pickup point, luggage space and any cost sharing with the driver.

Can I find and offer rides on El Compas?

Yes. Post a request when you need a ride or offer a journey when you have space in your car. Include your route and date to help other dancers decide whether your plans fit theirs.

Where can I see ride requests?

Ride requests are available inside the app. If you don’t find a suitable journey, post your own request so other dancers can discover your plans.

Does El Compas organise the transport?

El Compas helps dancers connect and coordinate their journeys. The driver and passengers arrange the ride directly; posting a request does not confirm a seat or booking.

How do we agree on shared costs?

Discuss any contribution towards fuel, tolls and parking directly with the other dancer. Agree on the amount and payment arrangements before departure.

Can I arrange a return ride too?

Include your return date and destination in your request or conversation so everyone understands the full journey.

Accommodation

Tango accommodation

How can I find someone to share a room at a tango festival?

Post an accommodation request on El Compas with the event, dates and room preferences. Explain whether you already have a booking with a spare bed or want to find someone to arrange accommodation together.

Can I offer accommodation to visiting dancers?

Yes. Describe the place you can offer, the dates available and any costs or house rules. Discuss the stay with interested dancers before making an agreement.

Can I look for accommodation without attending a festival?

Yes. You can look for or offer a stay when visiting a city, whether or not your trip is linked to a tango event.

What should we agree before sharing a room?

Confirm whether you’ll have separate beds, the room and bathroom arrangements, the total cost and booking responsibility. Discuss arrival times, late nights, sleep preferences and cancellation conditions too.

Does El Compas book accommodation for me?

Accommodation is arranged directly between dancers. El Compas helps you connect; it does not make the reservation or confirm a room for you. Check the accommodation provider’s conditions before booking.

Where can I see accommodation requests?

Requests are available inside the app. If you don’t find a suitable stay or roommate, post your own request so other dancers can discover your plans.

Events

Tango events

What is the difference between a tango festival, marathon and encuentro?

A festival generally combines classes and social dancing, sometimes with performances or live music. A marathon usually puts social dancing at the centre of the weekend. An encuentro often follows a more traditional milonga format, with particular expectations around invitations and floor etiquette. These labels vary between organizers. Read the program and participation guidelines to understand each event.

Can I attend a tango festival or marathon alone?

You can travel alone, but registration rules differ. Some events accept individual applications; others request paired registration or manage applications by dance role. Check the organizer’s rules before booking. You can also use El Compas to post a partner request or make shared travel plans.

Do I need a partner for tango festival workshops?

Some workshops require you to register with a partner; others accept individual dancers or rotate partners during class. Check the conditions for the specific workshop. If you need someone to attend with, post a request on El Compas naming the event, class and your dance role.

Does joining an event on El Compas mean I have a ticket?

Joining an El Compas event community does not confirm registration, admission or a ticket. Complete the organizer’s own registration and payment process separately.

Are all events in the calendar El Compas partners?

The calendar and our partnerships are separate. Events identified as partners have an agreed collaboration with El Compas; a calendar listing alone does not indicate a partnership.

Organizers

For tango organizers

What is El Compas for tango event organizers?

El Compas gives your event a dedicated community where dancers can connect before, during and after the event.

Attendees can discover who else is coming, make plans, find people to share accommodation or rides with, look for dance partners and stay connected afterwards. Organizers can share their program and real-time updates, while attendees have a space to interact and help each other.

How do I create my tango event on El Compas?

You can do it yourself, and it is free. In the app, open Events, click Create and send your request to become an organizer. We approve it, and then you can add your event information and program and invite dancers to join your community.

If you want to experience El Compas first, you can also explore a test event from a dancer's perspective.

Who can organize an event on El Compas?

Everyone. Any dancer, milonga host, school or festival team can become an organizer. Send your organizer request when you create your event and we approve it.

Is it free to create an event?

Yes. Creating and organizing an event on El Compas is free.

Why create my event on El Compas?

Dancers can share accommodation and rides and split the costs, which helps more people come. You can also see how many dancers are looking for a partner, for example followers waiting for a match, and help match them with other dancers.

How do dancers join my event community?

Once dancers register for your event, you can invite them to your El Compas community using a direct link or QR code.

Once inside, they can complete their tango profile, see who else is attending and start connecting.

When should I invite dancers?

Ideally, as soon as they register. Add your El Compas link or QR code to the registration confirmation email so dancers can start connecting early.

You can keep the link at the bottom of subsequent attendee emails as a reminder. During the event, display the QR code at strategic places around the venue so dancers can easily join on the spot.

How can El Compas make my event easier for dancers to attend?

Connecting attendees beforehand can reduce both the financial and social barriers to attending an event.

Dancers can find people to share accommodation or transportation with, potentially reducing the cost of travelling. Those coming alone can also meet other attendees beforehand and make plans for dinner, sightseeing or exploring the destination together.

How can El Compas improve the attendee experience?

The experience starts before the first tanda. Dancers can meet people before they arrive, organize accommodation or rides, make plans and recognize familiar faces when they reach the venue.

This can be particularly valuable for dancers travelling alone or internationally and helps turn the event into a broader social experience.

Can dancers find a tango partner for my event?

Yes. Dancers can create a detailed partner request within the event community and discover other attendees looking for a partner.

Tango profiles provide useful information such as dance role, level, experience, height and tango styles. For festivals offering classes or workshops, this can help dancers who want to participate but don't already have a partner.

What can dancers discover about other attendees?

El Compas profiles are built specifically for tango. Dancers can share their profile picture, dance role, level, height, years of experience, tango styles, languages, what they're looking for and tango connections in common.

They may discover that friends are attending, recognize someone from another event or realize that they already have tango contacts in common.

Can dancers make plans together before the event?

Yes. Attendees can use the community to find people interested in sharing accommodation or rides, having dinner, sightseeing or doing other activities together.

For international events, this is particularly useful for dancers who extend their stay to explore the destination.

How can dancers use El Compas during the event?

El Compas keeps the event and its community in one place. Dancers can check the program and organizer updates, connect with attendees, ask questions, organize activities, find rides, share an airport taxi, share pictures or ask about lost items.

For festivals offering classes, they can also look for dance partners.

Can attendees help each other in the event community?

Yes. Dancers can ask questions, reply to each other and share useful information with the community.

They can coordinate rides, activities and practical arrangements themselves, while organizers use the community for official information and important updates.

Can I share real-time updates during my event?

Yes. You can publish real-time announcements and updates directly in your event community, giving dancers an easy place to find the latest information throughout the event.

Can I share my event program on El Compas?

Yes. You can add your program directly to El Compas so dancers can access it from the event community.

If you already maintain your program on your website, you can also link directly to it from El Compas.

Can dancers stay connected after my event?

Yes. Connections made on El Compas continue after the event.

Dancers can stay connected with people they met and recognize or reconnect with them at future tango events, gradually building their tango network across events and communities.

Can El Compas help promote my tango event?

Yes. We work with selected events as El Compas partners. Partner events can be featured on the El Compas website and social media, helping more dancers discover the event and its community.

Can El Compas help with my event's visual identity and social media?

For some partner events, we can provide additional creative support — from developing or refining your visual identity and logo to creating Instagram posts and promotional visuals.

For a closer collaboration, get in touch with us to discuss how we could work together.

How do I become an El Compas partner?

Contact us and tell us about your event. We'll discuss what you're looking for, how El Compas could support your event and community, and what kind of collaboration could make sense for both sides.

Can I create a regular milonga on El Compas?

Yes. Create your milonga as an event, invite dancers with a direct link or QR code, and they join with their tango profile.

Can dancers recognise people they met at a milonga?

Members who joined the event can see its attendee list with tango profiles, including home city, role, level and languages. This helps them put names to familiar faces and recognise people next time.

Can I keep my own website, ticketing and registration?

Yes. El Compas adds a community space around your event. Your website, ticketing and registration process stay exactly as they are.

Do I have to coordinate partners, rides and rooms myself?

No. Dancers can find partners, rides and roommates themselves in the app. You can still see who is looking for a partner and help make introductions.

Does El Compas handle ticket sales or event registration?

Use El Compas for your event community, program and coordination. Joining the event space does not replace your ticket purchase or registration process.

Schools

For tango schools

How do students join their tango school community on El Compas?

Each school has its own dedicated community inside El Compas. Schools can display their QR code in the school, add it to their website, or provide a direct link to join. Students simply scan or click to join their school community and connect with other dancers.

How can students find a tango partner for classes?

Students can create a detailed partner request to find someone specifically within their school community. They can describe what they're looking for instead of posting a generic message and hoping the right person sees it.

What can students see before connecting with another dancer?

El Compas profiles show information that matters in tango: profile picture, dance role, level, height, years of experience, tango styles, what they're looking for and tango connections in common. This information usually isn't shared — or easy to find — in a WhatsApp group.

Does El Compas replace our WhatsApp or Facebook group?

No. WhatsApp and Facebook are useful for announcements and conversations. El Compas complements them with a tango-specific space where students can discover other dancers, view detailed profiles and look for partners.

Is El Compas useful for beginner tango dancers?

Yes. Beginners often haven't built a tango network yet. Their school community makes it easier to discover other students, understand who they are as dancers and start making connections.

Can being on El Compas bring more people to my school?

Yes. Other dancers can see the partner requests that come from your school, so your classes, practicas and milongas become more visible and can bring more people.

How can my tango school join El Compas?

Contact us to create your school's community on El Compas. Once it is set up, you can invite students through your QR code or a direct link from your website.

Can students find partners for practicas and milongas too?

Students can use partner requests to explain their plans for classes, practicas, milongas and other tango activities.
